Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It built on the progress made through the Declaration on Primary Health Care at Alma-Ata, the World Health Organization's Targets for Health for All document, and the recent debate at the World Health Assembly on intersectoral action for health. Discussions focused on the needs in industrialized countries, but took into account similar concerns in all other regions. This conference was primarily a response to growing expectations for a new public health movement around the world. Educate around specific vulnerable refugee populations, including women, children and LGBTI persons.įamily Physicians/Primary Care Practitioners, Specialists, Nurses, Mental Health Workers, Nurse Practitioners, Allied Health Workers, Policy & Public Health Specialists, Refugees, Researchers, Students, Settlement Workers and other Professionals interested in refugee health.The first International Conference on Health Promotion, meeting in Ottawa this 21st day of November 1986, hereby presents this CHARTER for action to achieve Health for All by the year 2000 and beyond.Share knowledge and experience about how COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) has disproportionately impacted refugee populations.Advocate for better health and social outcomes for refugees through upholding human rights and fair practices.Build capacity for the care of refugees taking into account structural competency and culturally appropriate care, including through trainees’ education.Define, formulate, and evaluate research in refugee health, and foster international research collaborations and networking among scholars, service providers, policymakers, and refugee community advocates involved in the field of refugee health.Identify, develop and disseminate evidence-based knowledge and practices for the equitable care and support of refugees, including physical, medical, mental and social wellbeing.Its primary purpose is to promote the health of refugee populations during the continuum of their flight, migration, and resettlement by assembling multidisciplinary experts in research, education, advocacy and clinical practice. The annual North American Refugee Health Conference (NARHC) is the largest interdisciplinary conference in the world.
